Aims and Scope
The Deutsche Biographische Enzyklopädie (DBE) [Dictionary of German Biography] provides information on roughly 62,000 individuals whose lives, works and achievements are considered remarkable to this very day. Reaching back as far as Charlemagne, the DBE covers individuals from all walks of public life who contributed to the cultural heritage of the German-speaking areas.
While not attempting to include all biographical details, the articles provide more than just bare biographical facts, thus exemplifying each individual's specific qualities. As a rule, a reference to further reading is provided at the end of each entry.
The 1,300 longer articles, written and signed by recognized experts, represent biographical appreciations and contain references to further literature.
The database contains the full entries of the second, revised and enlarged edition of the DBE. All articles feature full text searches along with a variety of hyperlinks. DBE Online also offers biographical information on individuals who are mentioned in the DBE but do not, however, have their own article.
Expanding the book edition, the online version puts major biographical details (name, dates of birth and death, profession, places mentioned) in front of each DBE article and facilitates online searches by specific indices.
